The sun beat down on my pale skin as old country twang floated on the breeze from where my phone sat atop a pile of my clothes. What was supposed to be a warmer weather weekend getaway had turned into a week long trip of self discovery, and sun seeking.

I have driven the stretch of road between Orderville, UT and Kanab many times, always passing the ever enticing sign that reads “Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park 8 miles >>>.” Always road tripping on someone else’s schedule, my curiosity has never been satisfied. That was not the case today, though.

I’m not going to tell you that Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is reason enough to move you to pack up and head South for the weekend. As the Ranger at the entry station told me, the State Park’s main draw is for ATV use. What I will tell you though, is that you should take a trip. Get up and go.

As the sun began to sink behind the pink dunes, I brushed the vibrant sand from my back and legs. It seemed I had the scene to myself. The only sign of any company I might be keeping were these little prints in the sand.

I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and wholeness in being able to enjoy my own company. My continually overthinking thoughts weren’t bombarding me and my mind was a clean slate, filled only with coral dunes bordered by red cliffs and thoughts of what sounded good for dinner… All because I took the detour I’ve always wanted to take. This life is not meant to be simply endured, it is to be enjoyed. We truly are that we might have joy.
